Church of the Resurrection in Foros

The Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Foros is located on a picturesque high mountain near the highway Sevastopol-Yalta. The upper elevation reaches 412 meters above sea level.

A Church was erected in memory of the events of 1888 at the Borki station, where the train of the Royal family crashed. Alexander III and his loved ones were unharmed. In honor of this event, prayer services were held throughout Russia and churches were built.

The temple was built in 1888-1892 at the expense of merchant A. G. Kuznetsov, designed by architect N. M. Chagin. During the construction of the temple, a special technique of laying flat brick plinths, the walls are lined with white Inkerman stone. The Church is decorated with a patterned porch with a bell tower pointing up, and guilded crosses shine brightly in the sun. Columns with carved capitals, panels and window sills were made of Carrara marble.

In the interior design of the Church is a luxurious carved oak iconostasis with guilded Royal gates. Icons for the temple were painted by famous Russian painters. The walls of the temple were painted with Byzantine ornaments.

On October 4, 1892, The Church was consecrated by Bishop Martinian of Tauris in honour of the Resurrection of Christ.

Until 1917, the Church operated a school of letters, then a parochial school. After the revolution of 1917, a difficult time came for the Church. In 1924, the priest Pavel Undolsky was repressed and exiled, and in 1927, precious utensils were expropriated, the guilded crosses on the dome and on the towers of the Church were thrown down, and the bells were melted down. After the great Patriotic war of 1941-1945, a restaurant was located in the premises of the temple.

Restoration work began in 1987. The Church was finally restored and re-opened its doors in 1990. Services were resumed.

Above the Church, the old South-Bank highway goes to the city of Sevastopol through the Baydar gate. They offer the best view of the Church, as if hovering over the Southern coast of the Crimea.
